Explanation:

The use of various building materials in road construction is particularly important. For the long service life of traffic roads, the road surface and infrastructure must have the same load-bearing capacity. The load-bearing layers are exposed to large temperature fluctuations and therefore Frost. Evaluation of the used building materials according to freezing properties can be performed by Frost swell test according to Swiss standard SN 670 321a (2001).

Before starting the test, the optimal water content of the soil sample is determined. The simple 5-day test involves a complete freeze-thaw cycle with realistic temperature gradients. The sample container is made of an insulating material to prevent the formation of a heat bridge. The increase is determined by continuous and micrometer accuracy through a high-precision LVDT indicator. In addition, temperatures are recorded on the ground and on the surface of the soil sample.

The purpose of the research is to determine:

  • Maximum expansion during freezing
    Lifting coefficient
    Reduction in load-bearing capacity after dissolution (CBR-Wert “ ” California Bearing Ratio”)
